What I offer

HAB Risk Assessment & Monitoring Programme Design

Advisory support for national and regional HAB monitoring programmes — from sampling protocol design and method selection to laboratory capacity assessment and quality assurance frameworks. Drawing on direct experience coordinating monitoring activities across 20+ countries through the IAEA Technical Cooperation programme.

Marine Biotoxin Analytical Consulting

Technical guidance on LC-MS/MS and receptor binding assay (RBA) methods for shellfish toxin analysis. Covering method validation, reference material sourcing, troubleshooting, and regulatory alignment with EU and Codex frameworks.

Environmental Data Analysis & Visualisation

Data analysis pipelines in R for environmental monitoring datasets — including time series analysis, dose-response modelling, spatial analysis, and automated reporting. Custom Shiny applications for laboratory workflows and interactive data tools.

Training & Capacity Building

Workshops and training sessions on HAB identification, biotoxin analysis, R programming for environmental scientists, and laboratory data management. Delivered in English, French, or German, in person or remotely.

Scientific Advisory & Policy Support

Expert contributions to science-policy interfaces — including intergovernmental panel participation, technical document review, and guidance development. Experience with IAEA, FAO, IOC-UNESCO, and IPHAB frameworks.

Talks & Speaking Engagements

Invited presentations for conferences, workshops, and institutional events on HAB science, monitoring programme design, and the role of data tools in environmental governance.

Working with me

I work on a project basis, typically starting with a short scoping conversation to understand your needs and define deliverables. Here is how a typical engagement looks:

1

Scoping call

A short initial conversation (30 min, no charge) to understand your challenge, timeline, and what a useful deliverable looks like.

2

Proposal & scope

I send a brief written scope covering objectives, deliverables, timeline, and fees. No work begins until we agree on scope.

3

Delivery & follow-up

I deliver the agreed outputs — whether a report, dataset, training session, or technical review — and remain available for follow-up questions within an agreed period.

Selected impact

Harmonised benthic sampling protocol for 20 IAEA Member States

Co-designed and facilitated consensus on a standardised benthic sampling protocol for ciguatera-relevant organisms, adopted at the INT7022 workshop in Cuba (March 2025) by scientists from 20 countries across Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific.

Open-source bioassay analysis suite

Built and published an R Shiny application automating competitive binding assay processing for saxitoxin, brevetoxin, and ciguatoxin RBA and ELISA workflows. Developed in collaboration with the University of Costa Rica and now used in IAEA Member State laboratories. Available on GitHub.

IAEA Coordinated Research Project K41027

Managing a multi-year coordinated research project linking HAB monitoring, marine biotoxin analysis, and isotopic nutrient tracing across approximately 30 participating institutions worldwide.

Range expansion documentation — Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax

Published the first comprehensive multi-country time series analysis demonstrating the northward and westward expansion of a toxic dinoflagellate across Northern European waters, using long-term monitoring data from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Germany (Harmful Algae, 2026).
