About
Marine scientist, data enthusiast, and Associate Research Scientist at the IAEA.

I am Kristof Moeller, a marine biochemist and data scientist currently working as Associate Research Scientist at the IAEA Marine Environment Laboratories in Monaco. My work focuses on harmful algal blooms, marine biotoxins, and the analytical and data systems that support food safety and policy response.
I completed my doctorate (Dr. rer. nat., magna cum laude) at the University of Bremen in 2024, with research conducted at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven. My PhD was funded by a private scholarship from the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU). Before that, I obtained my M.Sc. in Biochemistry from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.
At the IAEA, I work at the intersection of marine science, environmental monitoring, and public health. I coordinate technical cooperation projects with Member States across the globe, support the development of harmonised analytical protocols for biotoxin monitoring, and contribute to the scientific foundation of food safety regulation and ocean governance.
My research spans harmful algal bloom ecology, marine biotoxin detection by LC-MS/MS, toxicological risk assessment of microalgal species, and data analysis in R. I received the 2023 ISSHA Maureen Keller Award for Best Oral Student Presentation at the International Conference on Harmful Algae in Hiroshima.
I am available for scientific consulting, expert advisory contributions, and speaking engagements on harmful algal blooms, marine biotoxins, and environmental data analysis.
